The NorthPointe Christian Middle School Baseball team opened their season on Tuesday April 10th. Opening day starter, Jarrett Berends looked very sharp on the mound, despite the huge snowflakes that were falling all around him throughout the first two innings. While Jarrett was hot while tossing four scoreless innings in the game, the rest of the Mustangs did their best to stay warm on the field. BJ Bufton was certainly not affected by the cold weather, as he was hot at the plate going 2 for 2 with 3 RBI’s, 2 runs scored and 3 stolen bases. BJ’s second run scored, which happened in the 3rd inning gave the Mustangs a 6 – 0 lead. Ethan Visser also had a good game at the plate as he went 1 for 1, with a walk and a run scored.
The Mustangs seemed to be on cruise control, until Northview rallied during their last at bat in the 5th inning, scoring 6 runs off Mustang relief. BJ Bufton was then called upon to close things out and came in to retire three straight batters to preserve the 6 – 5 win in the Mustangs season opener.
In the second game, Northview jumped out to take a 5 – 0 lead over the Mustangs after two innings. Despite the early deficit, the Mustangs never gave up and battled back in the top of the 4th inning, lead by Matt Kintz, who tried to help his own cause on the mound by going 1 for 1, with an RBI and a run scored in the inning. Ben DeHann also came up with a big two run single in the top of the 4th inning as well, drawing the Mustangs within two runs of Northview. Kintz went on to retire three straight batters again in the bottom of the 4th inning and finished the game with 5 strikeouts; however the Mustangs were unable to bring any more runs across the plate in the top of the 5th inning, as they lost the second stanza, 5 – 3.
