Multiple Teams · Baseball defeats Zeeland West in 12 innings

NorthPointe outlasted Zeeland West on Friday with a 4-3 win in 12 innings.   Spencer Goebel started the scoring with a double driving in Ben Hill in the 1st.   Clay Coutney tied the game the 3rd with a long sacrifice fly to center driving in Josh Strube.  In the 5th, NPC scored without a hit when Mike Hanson who walked scored on a wild pitch.   Zeeland scored 2 in the 6th with an RBI single by TJ Langeland and an RBI fielder’s choice off the bat of Luke Petro.

NPC put the game in extra innings when Jake Melton reached 1st on a error and was bunted to 2nd by Hanson.  Ben Hill then singled putting runners at the corners.  Beau Redfield got the tying RBI with a sacrifice fly to center.  The throw to plate beat Melton but the ball popped out of the catcher’s glove on the collision at the plate.

Both teams had chances to go ahead in the 5 extra innings but good pitching and defense kept the game tied until the bottom of the 12th.  With one out in the 12th, Nate Silvey lined a single to right, then quickly stole 2nd.  Jonah Kok moved Slively to 3rd on an infield single.  Zac Sturgeon got the game winning single with a ground ball with no play at the plate.

Both teams had solid pitching through all 12 innings.  Nate Silvey pitched 6 strong innings in the no-decision.  Silvey struck out 7 and gave up only 4 hits.  Ben Talon got the win pitching a shutout in innings 7 through 12 to get his first win of the season.

Logan Thimm was relieved in 7th inning by TJ Langeland.  Thimm gave up on 4 hits and two earned runs posting 6 strikeouts.  Luke Petro took the loss in the 12th for Zeeland West.
